Viia, the other way

Taken from the Latin word for road, the VIIA brand covers SNCF Logistics' rail motorway activities:

  • the Bettembourg (Luxembourg) – Le Boulou (near Perpignan, France) connection, which is the longest rail motorway in Europe and has been operated by Lorry Rail since 2007,
  • the AFA alpine rail motorway, co-operated with Trenitalia since 2003.

On a rail motorway, complete trucks are transported by train, unlike conventional combined transport, which involves the carriage of mobile trailers or containers.

This system can transport all types of semi-trailers that meet European standards and does not require carriers to invest in specific equipment.
